Phillip W. Bennion, MD

Dr. Bennion received a bachelor degree in Zoology from Brigham Young University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Creighton University where he was awarded the De La Vega Academic Scholarship for academic achievement. He was selected for early election to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and graduated with honors. Dr. Bennion completed his orthopaedic residency at Summa HealthSystem in Akron, Ohio.
Following his orthopaedic education, Dr. Bennion was awarded a fellowship at the distinguished Carrell Clinic in Dallas, Texas where he obtained specialized training in shoulder and elbow surgery. He was privileged to train there under renowned shoulder surgeons Drs. Wayne Z. Burkhead and Sumant G. Krishnan.
Dr. Bennion has special interest in the treatment of sports-related injuries of the shoulder and knee. He performs arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery, including multi-ligament knee reconstruction and reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Dr. Bennion has authored and coauthored scientific articles and book chapters on topics related to shoulder surgery. He provides orthopaedic care to area high school, collegiate and professional athletes.
Dr. Bennion is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is committed to providing the highest quality of treatment and service for his patients and believes in individualizing his care for each patient based on their unique needs.
Joining the Hedley Orthopaedic Institute in 2008, Dr. Bennion has returned to his hometown of Phoenix. Married to an OB/GYN and father of two, he enjoys his family and is an avid cyclist.
Mauricio A. Valdes, MD

Mauricio A. Valdes, M.D., is a board certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon. He completed his orthopaedic residency and fellowship training in spine surgery at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He also specializes in orthopaedic trauma, a fellowship that he completed at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital.
Dr. Valdes focuses in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and pathology causing neck and back pain. Some examples include, but are not limited to, arthritis, disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, spinal deformities and scoliosis, tumor and infection. His treatments include steroid injections, minimally invasive and complex reconstructive spinal surgery. He also offers vertebroplasty/kyphoplasty and surgical treatment for complex spinal fractures.
Dr. Valdes’ research seeks to improve the biology of spinal fusions (used for surgical treatment of back and neck pain) by developing bone producing stem cell-based techniques that stabilize areas of the spine that are causing pain. Dr. Valdes is an art and travel enthusiast. Dr. Valdes is fluent in Spanish.
